Interest in choledochal cysts has mounted since the review of Alonso-Lej et al, published in 1959, with over 1,400 cases having been reported in the world literature. The desxriotion of an anomalous relationship between the common bile duct and the pancreatic duct by Babbitt et al, as well as their formation of a long common channel, revolutionized etiologic concepts. Surgical management of choledochal cysts has undergone major changes during the past two decades. Removal of choledochal cysts with anastomosis of the remaining biliary tree to duodenum or jejunum has been advocated.
