Benign retroperitoneal schwannomas are rare in primary retroperitoneal tumors. Even though laparoscopic and hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery have been widely performed, laparoscopic surgery for retroperitoneal tumor is not a common procedure. We present a case with a 6-cm right retroperitoneal tumor, which was fount incidentally during a physical check, without any specific symptoms. Abdominal CT revealed a well-encapsulated mass with prominent cystic degeneration and a right renal cyst. Angiography showed that the tumor was fed from one of the lumbar arteries. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a right retroperitoneal neurogenic tumor. The retroperitoneal tumor and renal cyst which were successfully treated by hand-assisted laparoscopic resection and unroofing technique. Postoperative pathological examination of the resected tumor disclosed it was an ancient schwannoma. Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery proved to be a less invasive surgicla one with less postoperative complications and a rapid recovery. It could be considered as an alternative method for selected retroperitoneal tumors. |
