Objective: This is a prospective study without a control group. The author evaluated the efficacy of finasteride for the treatment of gross hematuria secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Patients and Methods: Twenty-three patients, aged from 58 to 84, with recurrent episodes of gross hematuria secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated
With finasteride at 5 mg/day for 3 months. Before treatment, other sources of hematuria were excluded by using intravenous pyelography, cystoscopy, and urine cytology. Transrectal prostatic biopsy was done to exclude prostatic malignancy when the level of prostate specific antigen was higher than 4 ng/ml.
Results: Gross hematuria subsided within 2 weeks of treatment in all 23 patients. All patients were followed up to 9 months. Nineteen patients (83%) had improved results in urine analysis. Finasteride was well tolerated by all 23 patients.
Conclusion: In this prospective study, finasteride was shown to be clinically effective in managing intermittent gross gross hematuria secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia. |
