摘要 |
Toxic dilatation of the colon may be due to inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease of the colon. However, recent experience has shown that infective colitis due to shigellosis can also produce this complication. We present five cases with toxic megacolon (four inflammatory bowel disease and one shigellosis) and outline the clinical features and treatment of these patients. It is important to distinguish shigellosis from other infectious aetiologies at an early stage because treatment with corticosteroids can cause serious, potentially fatal complications. In cases resulting from infections, where the causative agent is identified early and therapy produces an improvement in the patient’s condition, then the condition will often respond to medical management alone. |
