Purpose: To report the early experience of Veteran General Hospital, Taichung (VGHTC) in a colorectal screening program.
Materials and Methods: From Feb 1,2002 to Dec 31, 2002, a total of 5732 asymptomatic patients including those admitted in VGHTC due to other diseases and the general population of community near our hospital took part in a colorectal cancer screening program. We used immunochemical fecal occult blood test (FOBT) as the primary screening tool and then re-examined with colonoscopy or barium enema or colon CT if FOBT was positive.
Results: Of the 5732 patients, a total of 4161 sent back the specimens and among them 259 positive cases were found. Only 98 patients received further examination. Of these 98 patients, we found 39 patients with normal findings, and 59 patients with abnormal findings. Of the abnormal cases, we found 10 cases with adenoma, 30 cases with colon polyps, 10 cases with diverticulosis, 11 cases with colon cancer, and 5 cases with colitis. The FOBT positive rate was 6.22% and the complete examination rate is 38%, cancer positive predictive rate is 11.1%. The total cancerscreening rate is 0.26%.
Conclusions: The screening rate for colorectal cancer was 0.26% in this early experience. This may theoretically be improved by education up to 0.68%. The colorectal screening program can give an early presentation of colorectal cancer. |
