Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) may occur anywhere along the
gastrointestinal tract, most commonly arising in the stomach and small intestine.
Obstruction can result from intraluminal growth of an endophytic tumor or from
luminal compression of an exophytic lesion. Intussusception with obstruction is a
very unusual presentation in this situation. We present hereby a 64-year-old female
with a rare complication of GIST - jejunal intussusception; the patient experienced
intermittent colicky abdominal pain and abdominal distension with variable severity
for 2 months. Preoperative abdominal computed tomography revealed the
characteristic “target sign” of intussusception, and surgical exploration revealed
jejunal intussusception secondary to a dumbbells-shaped tumor. The pathology
report and immunohistochemical studies confirmed the diagnosis of GIST. She was
healthy and had no recurrence in a 1-year follow-up. |
