Congenital cervical teratoma is a rare neoplasm of the newborn infants. Although
most of the tumors are benign and curable by surgical excision, it brings about the
risk of fetal airway obstruction and causes fetal anoxia if airway obstruction is
undiscovered prenatally. We report a fetus bearing a large cervical teratoma, borne
by a 33 year-old female. There was no polyhydramnios or fetal hydrops during the
period of check up for pregnancy. The baby was delivered via a cesarean section at
the 38th week of gestation. Surgical excision was performed on the 5th day after
birth. The infant was in good condition after a six-month follow-up. The literature is
reviewed and the importance of prevention of, and a close watch for, possible fetal
airway obstruction, multidisciplinary team approach and proper intrapartum
management is stressed.
