Objectives: The dramatic recent increase of VATS (Video-assisted thoracic surgery)
lobectomy may be attributed to various reasons. However, the most important seems
to be the growing evidence that VATS lobectomy may improve the early
postoperative clinical course without jeopardizing the long-term oncologic outcome.
Methods: To discuss the limitations of VATS application in our clinical practice, to
predict the future direction of minimally invasive thoracic surgery for NSCLC (nonsmall
cell lung cancer), and to review the current status of VATS lobectomy for the
treatment of NSCLC.
Results: Recent clinical evidence demonstrated that VATS lobectomy for patients
with early stage NSCLC brings about fewer postoperative complications and
equivalent oncological outcome compared to the open lobectomy.
Conclusions: The role of minimally invasive surgery is rapidly evolving and it will
develop further in the future. Hence, thoracic surgeons should be prepared for all
innovative procedures and should be able to adopt greater flexibility in selecting
appropriate techniques based on the characteristics of the cancer, the patient’s
condition, as well as the intraoperative situation. |
