Alpha-fetoprotein mRNA (AFP mRNA) of peripheral blood has been investigated as
a surrogate marker for circulating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells or the socalled
isolated tumor cells of HCC. Recently, articles in the literature discussing the
method and timing of measurement, the biological technique, the specificity, and its
clinical role are increasing. Though some controversy is present, AFP mRNA is
suggested as an early detector of recurrence of HCC after resection, transplantation
or other modes of treatment. Using it to predict the prognosis has also been
recommended. However, more investigations are needed for evaluating the necessity
of combining this with other examinations to increase the predictability and the
clinical application. |
