摘要
Heterotopic bone formation is not an unusual condition, but it rarely occurs in a
clean surgical wound. Because of its uncommon occurrence and location, the condition
may not be suspected on initial encounter or it may be mistaken for malignant
lesions or a retained foreign body. We present a case of exostosis of the xiphoid
process 5 years after laparotomy. A firm mass in the upper abdomen under the previous
operative scar caused discomfort to this patient. Heterotopic bone measuring 12×4×1.5 cm in size was carefully excised, and no recurrence has been noted to date.
