摘要 |
The cases of multiple primary malignant neoplasms (MPM) have increased in recent years owing to prolonged life expectancy in the general population and improved prognosis for many cancers. Although rarely seen in the English literature, cases of multiple primary malignant neoplasms with gastric cancer (MPM-G) have been frequently reported in the Japanese literature. We observed nineteen cases of MPM-G from January 1984 to December 1988 which accounted for 2.6% of all gastric cancer patients on our computer registry system during the same period. Of these nineteen cases, seventeen were male and two were female, and the average age at diagnosis of the gastric cancer was 63.9 years. Six cases were found to have synchronous cancers and thirteen cases had metachronous cancers. The average time interval between diagnosis of the first and second cancers was 44 months for the latter. Organs of the digestive system were the most common sites with associated malignancies, of which the most frequently involved organ was the esophagus (3 cases). There were three cases with hematologic malignancies. The prognosis was not satisfactory especially in patients with synchronous cancers. It is important to keep in mind the possibility of multiple primary malignancies during the patient follow-up. Long term survival can be expected only if early detection and effective treatment can be achieved. |
