Soft tissue defects of the lower extremity, particularly the distal third of leg, ankle, and foot, are notoriously difficult to repair because of poor blood
supply to the skin of this area. The versatility and reliability of the extensor
digitorum brevis muscle flap can provide adequate bulky coverage in soft-tissue defects of the lower limb. The flap can be elevated with antegrade or retrograde pattern to cover small defects from distal third of leg to the dorsum and tip of foot. The donor site deformity is limited to the necessary scar needed while raising and rotating this flap for the reconstruction. Clinical applications, done from December 1993 to June 1995, of this flap in 10 patients are reported. Successful healings of the defects with good aesthetic and functional results at both recipient and donor sites were found. Owing to the third, even fourth, degree electric burn injury, only one failure of flap resulted. The other skin grafts partial loss or maceration healed spontaneously. Long-term follow-up gave excellent results. The extensor digitorum brevis muscle flap is recommended for management of the defects of lower extremity. |
