From July 1988 to June 1993, 83 patients (59 men and 24 women) with gastric
cancer underwent surgery here. The crude median survival time for the whole group of patients was 22.1 months, while 16.5% survived for a period of 5 years. After curative resection, the 5-year survival rate was 28.3%. The estimated median survival time for patients with stage I disease was more than 60 months. For stage II disease the median survival time was 30.1 months; for stage III, 9.0 months and for stage IV, 2.5 months. A retrospective study was done with reference to 10 items of their clinicopathologic factors for the patients undergoing curative resection (N=47). Univariate and multivariate analyses of those possible prognostic factors were performed, related to postoperative clinical course. In the univariate analysis, 3 of 10 items such as tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and serosal invasion significantly correlated to the prognosis. In a Cox multivariate analysis, tumor size was the only factor independantly affecting survival. Tumor size could be an index to predict the prognosis for patients suffered from gastric cancer. |
