During the years from July 1985 to June 1990,的cases of sacrococcygeal teratoma were treated at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). Among these, 14 cases were female and 5 cases were male. Of the 19 cases, the tumors in 14 were benign, 2 were immature and 3 were malignant; thus the malignancy rate was 15.8%. The incidence of malignancy for those whose diagnosis was made before two months of age was 6. 7% (1/5). For those with a diagnosis established after two months, half had malignant tumor (2/4). The overall rate of recurrence was 16%. Two cases with malignant tumor and one with immature tumor recurred. The two mortalies were malignant teratoma. In these two cases, the high level of serum alpha-fetoprotein remaining after operation suggested that serum alpha-fetoprotein is a useful prognostic marker. Three patients in this series (all were benign teratoma) who received tumor resection without coccyx resection showed no recurrence after follow-up for a period of from two to five years. No patient in this study had any associated congenital anomaly.
