Forty-five neonates (28 males and 17 females) with gastroschisis and under- Hospital during going surgical repair in National Taiwan University an 8-year period were reviewed. Nineteen cases (42.2%) were prenatally diagnosed by sonography. Twenty-five cases were spontaneously delivered and 20 were delivered by cesarean section. The abdominal defect was re-paired by layered primary closure among 13 cases and by staged operations among the remaining 32 (skin flap closure in 24, and silastic pouch closure in 8). Twenty-Two percent of all 45 cases (10/45) had major associated anomalies which consisted of 20% gastrointestinal abnormalities and 2% extra-gastrointestinal anomalies. The overall survival rate was 84.4%. We reviewed the principles of prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal management of gastroschisis. |
