Partial hepatectomy may result in changes of the local or systemic immuno- logical response. The spleen is also suspected to be affected. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the morphological changes of the spleen after partial hepatectomy. Male Wistar rats weighing around 200g were taken as subjects. Partial hepatectomies with resection of the median and left lateral lobes (67%) were performed. Another group of rats receiving a sham operation was taken for comparison. Rats were killed 6, 24, 48, or 72 hours after the operation. The spleen/body weight ratio was calculated using preoperative body weight. Histological pictures of spleen were also observed under hematoxylin-eosin stain. Results showed a remarkable increase of spleen/body weight ratio during the early stages following partial hepate-ctomy. Histological examination of the spleen, done 48 hours after partial hepatectomy, revealed an expanding white pulp and a narrowing red pulp which were related to the reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. It is suggested that the changes of spleen in weight ratio as well as histological picture were related to the immunological responses after partial hepatectomy. |
