Renal cell carcinoma has been known for its drug resistance in clinical patients. The multidrug resistance gene (MDR1)-related glycoprotein, gp-170 in cancer cells, is one of the major causes of chemotherapeutic failure. To clarify the possible role of gp-170 in renal cell carcinoma, the expression of gp-170 was examined immunohistochemically using an antibody against gp-170 in normal kidney tissue and renal cancer. This study shows that 6 out of 20 (30%) normal kidney tissues had gp-170 expression while 9 out of 30 (30%) renal tumors had gp-170 staining. The gp-170 expression is not related to the tumor cell type or stage. The relatively low positive rate of gp-170 in renal cell carcinoma with a similar expression rate in normal kidney tissue suggests that there must be other mechanisms participating in the MDR of renal cancer. |
