For thorough understanding of the characteristics of inguinal hernia in young male adults at maximal physical activity, we performed a prospec-tive study of 136 sides of primary inguinal hernia in 132 consecutive young male soldiers during one year period. The average age was 20.8-0.8 years old. Each patient was examined meticulously during operation according to Gilbert classification. The data was analysed by the Chi-square test. There were 126 (95.5%) unilateral indirect hernias, 2 (1.5%) direct hernias, and 4 (3%) synchronous bilateral indirect hernias. Of these, 110 (80.9%) sides were Gilbert type I, 18 (13.2%) were type II, 6 (4.4%) were type III, the 2 (1.5%) direct hernias were type V. Total 19 (14%) sides had loose and thin change of posterior inguinal wall. Thirteen (13 sides, 9.6%) patients were hospitalized emergently due to incarceration, which included 7 sides in Gilbert type I, 5 in type II, and 1 in type III. The study reveals that most of the patients in these age levels had typical and simple indirect inguinal hernia. The main type of the size of the internal ring was Gilbert type I. Gilbert type II inguinal hernia had higher incidence of incarceration. |
