This survey of spinal and spinal cord injuries in south Taiwan from January 1995 to December 1995 was carried out by a review of the hospital records. During this period, one hundred and seven patients with acute spinal and spinal cord injury (SSCI) were admitted to the Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital. Sixty-four (59.8%) of them had neurological deficits. The average age was 43.8 years. The male/female ratio was 2.2. The causes of SSCI were falls (51.4%), traffic accidents (38.3%), hit by heavy object (4.6%), gunshot (2.8%), and sport injury (1.9%), The levels of SSCI were cervical spine (28%), thoracic spine (20%), and lumbar spine (52%). The associated injury was seen in 30% of patients. SSCI resulted in a great loss for society as well as the individuals themselves. However, we should appeal to society to improve the circumstances which might lead to injury, as well as to the individuals themselves. |
