Subtotal colectomy with ileorectostomy has been proposed for the manage-ment of colon dysmotility constipation. However, many patients have frequent bowel movements and watery diarrhea, or both following form of this treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the proper colectomy for treating colon dysmotility constipation while avoiding these sequelae. Forty patients with idiopathic constipation patients were enrolled. All patients showed prolonged right and/or left colon transit time and normal sigmoid colon and rectum transit time. They received different kinds of colectomy (left, right, or subtotal), according to the prolonged transit time segment. The results showed that all the patients had dra-matic improvement of the constipation without frequent bowel movements and/or watery diarrhea 6 months after surgery. No significant complica-tions developed after surgery. These results suggest that precise colectomy can effectively correct colon dysmotility constipation. |
