Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVN FH) is a frequent complication after
fracture dislocation of the hip or displaced fracture of the femoral neck, but is rare after intertrochanteric fracture of the femur. We report two cases of AVNFH following intertrochanteric fracture, representing 0.3%of the 665 patients treated for intertrochanteric fracture during an 11-year period. None of the previously discussed causes of AVNFH, could be found in these two cases. Our findings indicate that AVNFH after intertrochanteric fracture is rare. Because such patients may have no apparent predisposing factors for AVNFH, greater care
should be taken in patients with hip pain after united intertrochanteric fractures. |
