A 2-year-old girl was brought to the emergency room because of abdominal pain
lasting for half a day following blunt abdominal trauma. Based on the impression of
internal bleeding, an emergent laparotomy was performed after fluid resuscitation.
Internal herniation with bowel gangrene caused by a mesenteric defect was found.
After reduction of the hernia, segmental bowel resection with end-to-end anastomosis
was performed. The post-operative course was uneventful, the patient began oral
feeding on the eighth post-operative day and was discharged on the seventeenth postoperative
day. Internal herniation caused by a mesenteric defect is a very rare clinical
entity. We report this case and review the literature.
