Reports related to free transverse colon transfer for a pharyngoesophageal defect are rare in Taiwan. A 65-year-old man was admitted because of progressive dysphagia for 3 months. Squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx was diagnosed by pathologic examination. This patient underwent a partial pharyngoesophagectomy, total laryngectomy and free transverse colon transfer for pharyngoesophageal reconstruction. Oral intake was strted 14 days after surgery. Postoperative esophagogram and right side carotid angiogram revealed good healing of the anastomosis and patency of the vascular architecture. We recommend transverse colon interposition as a free graft for a pharyngoesophageal defect, especially for a large pharyngostoma. |
