From November 1996 through October 1999, we have performed retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (RA) on 30 patients with unilateral small adrenal tumor. The diagnoses included Conn's syndrome in 19, Cushing's syndrome in 6, nonfunctioning adrenal tumor in 2, adrenal cyst in 2, and pheochromocytoma in 1. Twelve of the 30 patients had a right adrenal tumor and 18 patients had a left adrenal tumor. The average tumor size was 2.2 (1 to 4) cm. During the operation, patients were placed in the lateral decubitus position and four trocars were used. All patients underwent RA successfully, the operating time ranged from 110 to 250 (mean 155) minutes, and the average blood loss during surgery was minimal. No complications occurerred during surgery in any case. After surgery,the postoperative hospital stay ranged from 4 to 8 (mean 5.5) days. The patients were followed for 1.5 to 24 (mean 13.5) months, and no tumor recurrence was found in any patient. RA can be concluded to be a reliable and effective technique for the treatment of patients with unilateral small adrenal tumors. |
