Aneurysms of the superior vena cava are rare. A healthy 24-year-old man was incidentally noted with a right parahilar mass was by chest radiograhpy. Chest computed tomography showed a supected anterior mediastinal tumor, thymoma, or tumor originating from the great vessels of the anterior mediastinum, To obtain a definite diagnosis, anterior median sternotomy was performed. A saccular-type aneurysm of the superior vena cava was found. The aneurysm was removed successfully. The postoperative course was uneventful after follow up 1 year. We review reports of aneurysm of the superior vena cava. Two types have been described: fusiform and saccular types. Evaluations of this aneurysm include inspiratory and expiratory chest radiography, chest CT, angiography, and cardiac ultrasonography. The majority of physicaians agree to only conservatitive treatment for a fusiform-type aneurysm, but that surgical intervention is needed for a saccular-type aneurysm. Regular follow-up for both types of aneurysm is necessary. |
