Appendiceal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma concomitant with pseudomyxoma peritonei is uncommon and a correct preoperative diagnosis cannot be easily made. We herein report a 35-year-old man who had mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix concomitant with pseudomyxoma peritonei, presenting as lower right quadrant abdominal pain, anorexia and fever. He underwent appendectomy and converted to exploratory celiotomy. At operation, there was a ruptured tumor mass located over the tip of appendix with massive mucinous fluid accumulated in the abdominal cavity, Subsequently, surgical debulking with right hemicolectomy, omentectomy and cytoreduction were performed. Intra-peritoneal catheter was also placed for further adjuvant chemotherapy. The postoperative course was uneventful. Five courses of postoperative adjuvant intra-peritoneal chemotherapy were administered. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) reveal no local recurrence in a twelve- month follow-up. |
