The purpose of this study was to compare dirrerences in overall results between detrusorrhaphy and intravesical anti-reflux procedures for unilateral vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). This is a retrospective study conducted from January 1998 to November 2000. During this period. we collected 20 patients who underwent unilateral ureteral reimplantation for unilateral VUR grades IV and V by detrusorrhaphy (group 1:10 cases) or intravesical anti-reflux techniques (group 2: 10 cases). The medical records of thes patients were reviewed.
A total of 20 patients with a mean age of 40.25 months old underwent unilateral ureteral reimplantation. The male-to -femal ratio was 12:8. The mean hospital stays were 8.00+-2.62 days in group 1 and 9.17+-0.75 days in group 2 (p = 1.000).Contralateral reflux developed in 1 patient (10%) after unilateral intravesical ureteral advancement; however, this spontaneously resolved within 10 months. Extravesical ureteral reimplantation is a reliable procedure with predictable results comparable to more traiditional intravesical techniques. In addition, as the detrusorrhaphy technique results in no sequential contralateral reflux, a low morbidity rate, and a high success rate, we continue to view it as our procedure of choice for unilateral ureteral reimplantation. |
