(K. pneumoniae) in anal abscess of diabetic patients in Taiwan.
Materials and Methods: From January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002, pus
drained from anal abscesses was collected for culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Patients were evaluated for diabetes mellitus by history or blood test.
Results: A total of 63 patients with anal abscess were identified. Their ages ranged from 25 to 70 years (mean±SD age, 43.2±10.3 years). There were 52 males and 11 females. Seven patients had a history of diabetes and another seven were diagnosed with diabetes in the course of the study. The mean age for patients with DM was older than those without DM (49.4±7.5 versus 41.4±10.3, p=0.0032).
Microorganisms from the enteric flora were the predominant pathogens and the
average number of microorganisms obtained was 2.6 per specimen. K. pneumoniae
was found more frequently in diabetic patients (10/14, 71% versus 16/49, 33%, p=
0.014) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) was more frequently found in non-diabetics
(38/49, 78% versus 6/14, 43%, p=0.020). Most K. pneumoniae isolates were susceptible to all antimicrobial agents tested except ampicillin.
Conclusion: We concluded that K. pneumoniae is the predominant pathogen in
diabetic patients with anal abscess in Taiwan, whereas E. coli is the predominant pathogen in non-diabetic patients. |
