A 23-year-old, 35-day postpartum female sustained fever, vomiting and consciousness disturbance after squeezing a facial furuncle; A diagnosis of septic cavernous sinus thrombosis by clinical physical examination was confirmed by computer tomographic scan with enhancement. The patient recovered completely after therapy. Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a serious and sometimes fatal disease which occurs more commonly in children, postpartum women and the aged. Patients with facial infections, facial wounds, paranasal sinusitis and those undergoing facial surgery have an increased incidence of the disease. The patient always has, initially an infection focus somewhere in the face; This leads to septic cavernous sinus thrombosis, neurological complication, coma or systemic sepsis and, finally even to death. The keys to treatment are a better understanding of pathophysiology, and anatomy, and familiarity with modern diagnostic techniques. Long-term, close follow-up may reduce the chance of neurological complications and sequelae. |
