摘要 |
Squamous cell papilloma of the esophagus is a rare lesion. It is usually small, and there are no clinical symptoms and signs. A 33 year-old male developed dysphagia and weight loss over a 4- month period. There was no history of corrosive injury or trauma of the esophagus. An esophagogram and panendoscopic examination confirmed a stricture at the middle third of the esophagus. Via endoscopic biopsy, several specimens were taken from this area, and the pathological examination revealed dysplasia of the esophagus. An elliptical incision of the esophageal mucosa, including the muscosal lesion, was performed. The histological examination of the resected specimen showed squamous cell papilloma of the esophagus. The patient was able to take a regular diet after the operation. A follow-up esophagogram identified a successful anastomosis with mild narrowing and a stiff wall. We report this case because stricture is an unusual clinical appearance in esophageal squamous cell papillomas. In reviewing the literature, squamous cell papilloma is usually benign, but some authors describe the possibility of malignant transformation. However, further studies of the relationship between papillomavirus infection and the risk of esophageal cancer are still required. |
